It seems like everything now comes in a box. It started with subscription boxes for makeup and snacks, but it’s now expanded to toiletries and pet products. If that wasn’t enough, now you can also get a brand new foam mattress in a box!

 

A few years ago, mattress-in-a-box companies like Casper, Leesa and Tuft & Needle, entered the mattress space. Founders of these companies set out to solve the problem of creating the perfect mattress that could fit into a box. No longer would consumers break their backs walking up 6 flights of stairs with a queen mattress in tow.

 

1010data analyzed mattress-in-a-box purchases from 2014 – 2017 and found that:

  • Mattress-in-a-box growth has quadrupled in just two years
  • Pure-play mattress retailers have lost 30% share relative to mattress-in-a-box brands
  • Casper and Tuft & Needle combined have sold more than two-thirds of all mattresses in the box space
  • Less than 7% of mattresses-in-a-box are returned during the 100 day trial
